Mattress Buying Guide

Choosing a mattress is an important part of creating a comfortable bedroom. Because mattress preferences vary from person to person, it helps to understand the main mattress types, firmness levels, and bed sizes before making a decision.

At Elm Hill Furnishings, we offer a selection of mattresses and sleep products from trusted suppliers and brands.

Mattress Types Explained

Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses use a system of steel coils for support.

They often provide:

• A more traditional mattress feel

• Good airflow

• A responsive, springier surface

• A range of firmness options

They may appeal to sleepers who prefer a supportive mattress with less of a sinking or contouring feel.

Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses are designed to contour to the body and reduce movement across the surface of the bed.

They may appeal to sleepers who prefer:

• A more cushioned feel

• A contouring surface

• Reduced motion transfer

• A quieter mattress with less bounce

Hybrid Mattresses

Hybrid mattresses combine a coil support system with layers of foam or other comfort materials.

They are designed to offer a balance between the responsive feel of an innerspring mattress and the cushioning of foam.

Hybrid mattresses are available in many different firmness levels and constructions.

Adjustable Bases

Adjustable bases allow the head and/or foot of the bed to be raised or lowered for different sleeping, reading, relaxing, or television-viewing positions.

Not every mattress is compatible with every adjustable base, so always review the manufacturer's compatibility information before purchasing.

Choosing the Right Firmness

Mattress firmness is highly personal.

Soft

Soft mattresses generally allow more cushioning and give at the surface.

They may appeal to people who prefer a plush or enveloping feel.

Medium

Medium-feel mattresses provide a balance between cushioning and support and are a common choice for many sleepers.

Firm

Firm mattresses provide less surface give and may appeal to people who prefer a more supportive or stable feel.

Because comfort preferences vary, there is no single firmness level that is right for everyone.

When shopping online, review the manufacturer's firmness description, mattress construction, dimensions, materials, and return policy before purchasing.

Common Mattress Questions

How often should I replace my mattress?

Mattress lifespan varies depending on the product, materials, construction, usage, and care.

Signs that it may be time to consider replacing a mattress can include:

• Visible sagging or wear

• Loss of support or comfort

• Damage to the mattress

• Changes in your personal comfort preferences

Always review the manufacturer's care and warranty information for your specific mattress.

Do I need a box spring?

Not necessarily.

Many modern mattresses are designed to work with:

• Platform beds

• Slatted bed frames

• Foundations

• Adjustable bases

The correct support system depends on the mattress.

Always review the mattress manufacturer's foundation and warranty requirements before choosing a bed frame or base.

What mattress size should I choose?

Consider:

• Your available bedroom space

• Bed-frame dimensions

• Number of sleepers

• Preferred sleeping space

• Doorways, hallways, and stairs required for delivery

Common mattress sizes include Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King.

Always review the exact dimensions listed for the mattress before ordering.
